Room check

Carry your Mac from room to room, mark each spot, and see where the signal falls off.

Room check (⌘7) shows where your signal falls off as you walk round your home. It comes with the unlock. What does it cost?

Steps

  1. Open Room check. Here, now shows your signal where you are.
  2. Type a name for this spot in Name this spot, like Kitchen, and press Mark This Spot. Plain Air takes ten seconds of readings there, while the button says Measuring.
  3. Carry your Mac to the next room and do the same.

Each spot shows its signal in dBm, how far it is above the noise, and a bar; a spot below −75 dBm is gold.

With two spots or more, Plain Air sums them up:

  • When the signal falls off by 15 dB or more from the best spot to the worst, it says by how much and between which spots, and that “A router nearer the middle, or a mesh point between them, would help.”
  • Otherwise it says the signal holds up across these spots, and by how much.

There are no floor plans. The spots are kept while Room check is open, so mark them in one walk.
