Over time

Name your networks

Give a network a name of your own, so its checks have a history. No Location needed.

Without Location, Plain Air can’t read your network’s real name, so the foot of the sidebar says Your network and Real name hidden: Location is off. You can give it a name of your own instead.

Steps

  1. Press Name this network at the foot of the sidebar.
  2. Type a name, such as Home, and press Save.

“The name stays on this Mac. Plain Air tells networks apart without reading their real names.” It does that from your router’s hardware address, turned straight into a salted hash: the address itself is never stored, shown or sent.

Each network you name keeps its own history: the Timeline shows Earlier checks on that name. To change the name, press Rename this network. Naming networks comes with the unlock. What does it cost?

If you allow Location, Plain Air shows the network’s real name instead. Why Plain Air asks about Location
