Getting started

Why Plain Air asks about Location

Only to show your network’s name. Plain Air never asks where you are.

macOS shows Wi-Fi names only to apps you allow to use Location. That’s the only reason Plain Air asks. It never asks for or uses where you are.

It asks only when you press Allow Location: on the welcome screen, or in Settings › General › Show my network’s name. Never at launch.

Without it, everything else works. Your network is just “your network”, and the foot of the sidebar says Real name hidden: Location is off. With the unlock you can give it a name of your own. Name your networks

If Location Services is off on your Mac

Then macOS keeps Wi-Fi names from every app, and Settings says so, with Open Location Services. Plain Air may also say Location Services is off on this Mac. Apple recommends it for Wi-Fi, so your Mac uses the right channels and power for your country. To turn it on:

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security.
  2. Turn on Location Services.
  3. Under System Services, keep Networking & Wireless on.
