Note new Intel-only apps, and the menu bar
With the unlock, Vernacular can read again when something arrives, and keep what’s left to do in the menu bar. All off until you turn them on.
Turn these on in Vernacular › Settings, under Watching. All three are off until you turn them on, and come with the unlock. What does it cost?
- Note new Intel-only apps: “Watches your Applications folders, printers and audio plug-ins, and reads again when something arrives.”
- Show in the menu bar: “What’s left to do, and a quiet note when something Intel only arrives.”
- Open at login: “Only needed for the note above.” It can be turned on once Note new Intel-only apps is on.
How watching works
Vernacular watches the Applications folder (and Utilities in it), the folders you added, the printer drivers in your Mac’s Library folder, and audio plug-ins, yours and the Mac’s. When something changes there, it waits a few seconds for the change to finish, then reads again quietly on your Mac. If something new needs you, it shows under SINCE THE LAST READ. What changed since the last read
There’s no notification. The note waits in the menu bar and on the Overview.
Helpers and background services aren’t watched: they change when an app installs them, and the next read notices. Press Read again any time.
In the menu bar
Beside the glyph: 3 to do, Nothing to do, or Reading while a read runs. Click it to see:
- 3 left to do before macOS 28, or Nothing left to do before macOS 28
- each thing left to do, with its lane
- SINCE THE LAST READ, if something changed
- Open Vernacular and Read Again
The count is the same as the checklist’s: what’s left to settle. The checklist
With watching or the menu bar on, closing the window leaves Vernacular running. To bring the window back, choose Open Vernacular in the panel, click Vernacular in the Dock, or choose Window › Vernacular (⌘0).
