Seeing it through

Move an app to the Trash

One app at a time, after you confirm. Put Back works. Vernacular never deletes anything.

Vernacular only reads. The one thing it can do is move an app you choose to the Trash, after you confirm. It comes with the unlock. What does it cost?

Where it’s offered

  • In Copies, beside each copy in the Applications folder. Copies of the same app
  • On a checklist card you’ve marked Don’t need. The checklist
  • On an app in the Applications folder that already can’t open.

It’s never offered for Apple’s apps, anything in /System, or an app inside another app. For apps outside the Applications folder, use Show in Finder and move it there.

Steps

  1. Press Move to the Trash.
  2. Vernacular asks: “Move Wayfarer to the Trash?” “You can put it back from the Trash. Vernacular never deletes anything.” Press Move to the Trash again, or Cancel.
  3. The first time, a panel says: “To move apps to the Trash, Vernacular needs you to choose the Applications folder once.” Choose the Applications folder and press Allow. If you cancel, or choose another folder, nothing is moved.
  4. The app goes to the Trash, and Vernacular reads again.

Apps from the App Store

Some apps, such as ones from the App Store, belong to macOS itself, so moving them needs your password. For those, Vernacular says “macOS needs your password to move this one” and “Vernacular will show it in Finder. Drag it to the Trash there, and Finder will ask for your password.” Press Show in Finder and do that.

Put it back

Open the Trash in Finder, select the app and choose File › Put Back. Vernacular never empties the Trash.
