What Vernacular reads

When Vernacular can’t tell

CAN’T TELL means Vernacular couldn’t read that one. It never guesses.

CAN’T TELL: “Vernacular couldn’t read this one. Add its folder to read it, or check its Get Info window.”

Vernacular gives a verdict only from what it read. When it couldn’t open a file, or the file is made for another kind of processor, it says so rather than guessing. On the roll it’s a dashed outline, and its lane says “Couldn’t be read.”

What to do

  • Add its folder. If the app is somewhere Vernacular doesn’t read by itself, add that folder. Add a folder or disk
  • Check its Get Info window. Select the app in Finder and choose File › Get Info (⌘I). After Kind, Apple’s words are Application (Intel), Application (Universal) or Application (Apple silicon). (Apple Support)

An app Vernacular can’t tell about isn’t counted as needing you, and isn’t in the checklist.
