What Vernacular reads

Add a folder or disk

Vernacular reads your Mac’s Applications folder by itself. Add your own Applications folder, or a disk with apps on it, once.

Vernacular reads the Applications folder (and Utilities in it) and the add-ons in your Mac’s Library folder without asking. Apps anywhere else, such as your own Applications folder in your home folder or another disk, need you to choose them once.

Steps

  1. Press Add a folder or disk on the welcome, or choose Read › Add a Folder or Disk, or press Add a folder or disk in Vernacular › Settings.
  2. In the panel, “Choose your own Applications folder, or a disk or folder that holds apps. Vernacular only reads it.” You can choose more than one.
  3. Press Add. Vernacular reads again, with the new folder.

Vernacular reads the apps in that folder, and in the folders one level inside it. It keeps a read-only bookmark, so it can read the folder again next time without asking. It can’t change anything in it.

If a disk you added isn’t connected, its apps are left out of that read.

Apple’s own apps

Apple’s apps all run natively, so they’re left out to keep the roll short. To include them, turn on Include Apple’s own apps in Vernacular › Settings.
